After the closing of Shore Bank, (which was bought out by Urban Partners Banks) South Side Community Federal Credit Union is now the ONLY financial institution on the South Side of Chicago with a community development mission.
It is African American owned and operated, and has been in business since 2003 with 1,700 members and 3.7 Million in assets. SSCFCU is a not-for-profit federally chartered community development financial institution that offers a variety of non-traditional products and services carefully designed to alleviate poverty and economically empower the community,
such as free financial education classes, free credit & housing counseling, and low interest rate loans. It serves as an alternative to currency exchanges and pay day loan stores.
SSCFCU has trained over 2,500 people through its financial education curriculum, provided free one-on-one financial/housing counseling to over of 1,500 families and has saved the community over 1 million dollars in interest charges and fees that would have otherwise been paid to predatory lenders and payday loans stores.
As a not-for -profit, SSCFCU is able to offer these high quality products and services by raising grant dollars and tax deductible monetary contributions from concerned citizens like you and me.
South Side Community Federal Credit Union has begun a capital campaign to raise funds to provide even more much needed services and programs. It seeks to help create jobs by making small business loans available, to invest more in affordable housing and help people avoid foreclosure as well as offer youth financial development programs.
